I like to consider myself pretty tech-savvy, as are most of my colleagues and friends. I’ve also found that the Internet is an awesome way to connect with people – family, friends, clients, potential clients – whether it be through social networking, email, or our website. As we built our small business, having a website and web presence seemed to be a “no brainer”. I was shocked to learn that we are in the minority of small business owners with a website or using social media for networking and promotion.

According to the April 2009 Discover Card Small Business Watch, a whopping 62% of small businesses (with 5 or fewer employees) do not have a website. That’s over 13 million small businesses without a web presence! Think about the clients and potential customers you may be missing! And as the younger generations become adults, they only know the web. They don’t know what the yellow pages are – they know what Google is. If you’re not on the web, how will they find your products or services?

The same Discover Card poll indicated that only 38% of small business owners belong to a social networking site such as Twitter, Facebook, or Linked In. However, the majority of them use these networking sites for personal use, not for promoting their business. Again, why not build your brand where people look for you? The web is the place to be – don’t be left out!
